Whatare some of the positive effects of moderate exercise during pregnancy?Does it reduce the risk of a miscarriage or complicated labour? Does itmake my baby healthier?
Dr. Clapp, a leadingpregnancy fitness researcher, reviewed 75 studies on maternal fitness andfetal outcomes in 1989 for an article published in the American Journalof Obstetrics and Gynaecology. Some of his findings include the followingbenefits:
- 50% reduced risk forintervention during delivery
- Reduced risk for cesareansection
- Shorter, easier laborand quicker recovery
- Babies of exerciseshad better APGAR scores
- Psycho/social benefitsinclude improved self-esteem and body image
- Relief from common posturaldiscomfort.
Other studies suggestthat expectant exercisers gain less weight and return to pre-pregnancyweight more quickly. The endorphins released into the bloodstream fromaerobic exercise cross the placenta to the baby. This is one way mom canshare her feeling of well-being with baby.
This positive news promptedthe American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology to change its recommendationsfor exercise during pregnancy in 1994. Now they encourage all mothers (excludingsome with certain complications) to exercise regularly and moderately toenhance health for mom and baby.
