Expert Q&A

By April Underwood
Fitness Consultant Playa del Rey, California

Ihave been advised to not work out until my first trimester is completed.I worked out regularly prior to my pregnancy, but my pregnancy was hardwon (15 months and 2 rounds of Clomid). Have you heard of an increase inmiscarriage if you workout during the first trimester? I am anxious forthese 12 weeks to pass so I can swim and use the stairmaster. What areyour thoughts?

If your doctor or caregiverhas advised you not to exercise for the first trimester, I would adviseyou to do the same.

Lately, for women whohave difficulty getting pregnant, or staying pregnant, doctors will adviseminimal activity to make sure that the pregnancy will stick. For the casesthat I'm experienced with, it's mainly a precaution. It may be annoying, but comparatively is a small sacrifice.

After your first 12 weeks, you can go back to swimming and the stairmaster. Swimming is best of thetwo because it keeps your body temperature at safe levels.
