Expert Q&A

By Kelli Calabrese
Exercise Physiologist

How often should my child be engaging in weight training?

Children should strive for a total body strengthening routine two times weekly, which could take up to 30 minutes per session. If the child is involved in other sports, consider how much physical activity they are doing in a week and where strength training can safely be incorporated. If your children are involved with organized sports, they might want to concentrate on strength training in the off season. Remember that actual muscle size is not increased in a prepubescent child.
