Expert Q&A

By Michael F. Wasserman
General Pediatrician

I'm hearing a lot about MRSA on my local news. It seems to be affecting athletes the most. My children play sports. How can I keep them safe?

The best idea is to be scrupulous regarding breaks in the skin. If there are cuts or abrasions, clean them thoroughly with Betadine or Hibiclens. Don't itch the site. Take Claritin if needed for itch. If there is increasing redness, warmth or tenderness, go see your doctor.
