Expert Q&A

By Michael F. Wasserman
General Pediatrician

What's the best way to handle bloody noses?

Bloody noses are best treated by strong, continuous pressure of the nasal passages. Also tipping the head back will reduce the level of blood pressure in the hose. Once the nose bleed stops, leave the clot alone. Don't try to take it our or encourage the child to blow his nose. That will only take the stopper out of the hole!
