Mommy Time
Making Postpartum Fitness
a Priority
a Priority
By Michele Batz
OK, let's see where you stand. If you're reading this article and you found yourself making up excuses or having doubts about getting started, stop right now and answer "yes" or "no" to the following questions:
- Do you feel your health is in jeopardy if you do not make a change soon?
- Do you feel by making changes now your life will improve?
- Are you willing to really get involved in your changes?
Can you set realistic goals? - Can you view this as a lifestyle change and not a temporary fix?
- Can you promise to try new approaches if one approach doesn't fit you?
- Can you take small steps toward reaching your goal and be ready for slight setbacks?
- Do you feel you can make a lifestyle change?
If you answered "yes" to all those questions, congratulations! You are ready to start on your new lifestyle. If you answered "no" to a couple of the questions, you will experience resistance to making fitness a habit and that resistance is coming from you.
How Do You Feel?
If you feel anxious or negative, you are not alone. We have become used to failing at fitness. We are used to abanoning our attempts to get into shape. We are used to feeling embarrassed or even ashamed of our efforts to lose weight. No wonder we feel resistance to committing to exercise! We see the whole "getting fit" thing as being futile. We've tried so many times, so why would this time be different? Because this time you are changing your attitude, your approach and even your way of thinking about fitness and good health. You are establishing the fitness habit from the inside first before you tackle it on the outside.
Ten Tips to Combat Your Resistance

Re: Assumes problem is motivation rather than logistics by anonymous on 06/03/2009 01:37AM
This assumes the problem is motivation rather than logistics. With 3 children two and under (I had twins who are colicky), who would hold the baby/babies while I exercised? They don't nap.
