The Big Fat Truth
Is Obesity a Disease?
By Carma Haley Shoemaker
Now, those who have succeeded with getting their claim approved assist others who have begun their fight. "I've assisted many people locally who battle [obesity]," says Costa. "Losing weight is much more complex than just backing off the table and stopping eating. If it were that easy, there wouldn't be any overweight or obese people! There are many physiological, environmental and emotional issues that contribute to obesity. Obesity is a disease."
Legislation to require health insurance coverage for weight loss programs is under consideration in at least five states including Georgia, Hawaii, Maryland, Montana and Virginia. In addition, there are many organizations that have begun to fight for or with those who suffer from obesity in an attempt to get them the help they want and need.
"We at Take Off the Weight are committed to assist every concerned person who is or knows someone who is suffering from [obesity]," says Costa. "Our drive is to raise awareness and public perception that obesity is a disease, encourage lawmakers to modify medical insurance laws so as to fully cover medically-supervised weight loss programs and to institute mandatory local and federal educational programs on nutrition which will reach every school in the United States. Most importantly, our aim is to help prevent lives from succumbing to this awful disease now and in years to come."
