Comfort Food
Stress-busting Meals
OK, so it's not a food as such, but soup is an incredible source of nutrients and energy, and can you think of anything more comforting than a hot bowl of soup? And the news with soup gets better. With a warm liquid base as the vehicle, nutrients are carried to organs and cells in the most efficient manner possible, nourishing the body easily and completely. Of course, Pirello says she prefers vegetable soups, but any soup will do the trick.
The combination of whole-grain pasta with lots of vegetables (no protein) is the perfect feel-good meal. The complex carbohydrates of noodles combine with the vitamins, minerals, fiber and moisture of vegetables to release serotonin, the feel-good compound in our brain, relaxing us and allowing us to focus on the task at hand. Oh, and the carbs? They provide a long sustaining energy, almost a simmer, to draw on throughout the day.
No, it's not birdseed; it's a whole grain that cooks up in no time flat. With a sweet, nutty flavor and an alkaline nature, millet is the only whole grain that does not cause the production of stomach acid, easing digestion of nutrients and relaxing our spleen, pancreas and stomach, the three organs that, in Chinese medicine, are the seat of calm or stress.
