Comfort Food
Stress-busting Meals
Healthy vegetarian foods chef Christina Pirello, author of Cooking the Whole Foods Way (H.P. Books, 1997) and Glow: A Prescription for Radiant Health and Beauty (H.P. Books, 2001), is responding with her own secret weapon to counteract the major stresses many of us have faced this year: war, a slumping economy, job insecurity, busy schedules, etc. Pirello says there is a place for comfort food when it comes to stress-fighting, but healthier comfort foods can actually offer more than just a minute on the lips: real long-term, stress-relief benefits.
"If you live in the modern world (and with a few exceptions, I believe we all do), you experience stress in some form or another," says Pirello. "And many of us know that stress can ravage us – causes everything from fatigue and depression to poor skin, hair loss and over-eating to disease or aggravation of an existing illness. I'm here to say that people shouldn't underestimate the power of their diet when it comes to fighting stress and the effects of stress. They can turn to comfort foods that can actually help in the stress-reducing process."
According to Pirello, the stress-busting secrets actually lie in, of all places, one's kitchen. For example, what you choose to put in your pots and pans can lay the foundation for either chaos or calm when in stressful situations.
