Are Condoms for You?

After having repeated bad experiences with birth control pills, Drue A. Ramirez of Pomona, Calif. found condoms to be the best choice for her and her husband. "The benefit of condoms is that they are clean, practically foolproof and easy to stop using if you decide you want to get pregnant," she says.

Because condoms actually collect the ejaculated semen inside the tip, there is no messy clean up. Your partner simply removes the condom before the penis returns to a softened state and tosses it into the trash.

It's also easy to get condoms. Nearly every grocery store, discount department chain and pharmacy sells various brands. You do not require a doctor's prescription or even a physical exam, and they are reasonably priced.

As an occasional smoker, Leah Vesselov of Roxboro, N.C. finds that condoms fit her lifestyle and satisfy her desires to avoid any additional health risks. "I smoke, on and off, and do not want to take birth control pills, not only because of the research linking cancer with birth control pills and smokers, but also because I'd like my body to remain in its natural state," she says.

The Minuses

Condoms don't seem too hard to use, but they can be uncomfortable for some men. And putting one on can take some getting use to.

Vesselov recalls the first year of condom use as a time of trying to get it right. "We had trouble with the comfort issue, putting it on, taking it off, catching every hair in the process," she says.

Trying different brands and sizes can elp alleviate discomfort. Planned Parenthood warns that some men are sensitive to latex condoms. For those affected by latex allergies, condoms made of plastic or animal tissues can be used.
