Partners can also take classes together to learn a skill that is entirely new to both of them, like rock climbing, dancing or skiing. "That way, neither person has a distinct advantage over the other and they get to share in the fun of learning together," Schurman says.
"It's easier for a woman who was in good shape before she became pregnant to return to a high fitness level after birth, but it still takes a concentrated effort," Braveman says. "The husband should be patient and encouraging. Unfortunately, new fathers generally have a hard enough time keeping up with their own fitness goals and may tend to lose track of their once favorite workout partner."
Once kids arrive, it's vital that you create time for each other and maintain a regular workout schedule. "If child care isn't readily available at the usual workout times, parents should alternate schedules. Creating an in-home workout station, or finding ways to include the child – such as investing in a Baby Jogger – are also good solutions for keeping the whole family fit," Schurman says. "Whatever it takes, in the long run, it will be worth it. The best role model a child can have is an actively healthy parent."
