Healthy Hiking

Hiking for Fun and Fitness

By Tamar Weiss

Pages:  1  2  3

When hiking with the family or in any sort of a group, don't ever go farther or push harder than the weakest member of the group is capable of doing, says Miller. His many years of experience have taught him to "not split the group up ... not for a moment. Stay together."

So many things can be gained by setting out on a hike. "It's a chance to get back to nature, enjoy the outdoors," says Hooper. "It's a good way to appreciate your surroundings."

Not to mention the exercise involved. When Miller reflects upon his most memorable hikes, he is reminded of the moose he came upon in the pristine valley, or "the summit of a 12,000-plus foot peak that had seen no visitors all year, and ... the two coyote playing and dancing with each other near a small stream." For Miller it seems that the positive outcomes of a nature hike are endless. But when narrowing down his vast experiences to one word, the thing he has gained most is "the peace."

There is certainly something to be gained from this mindset. Perhaps Greer puts it best when he says, "if I can spend a few hours walking in reasonably nice weather, I have had a fabulous day."
