Got fitness questions during your pregnancy? Fitness expert and mom Leisa Hart has answers?

Q. I've never been much into exercising, but now that I'm pregnant, I want to start so I don't gain a bunch of weight. What are the best exercises for someone who's just starting out?

L.H. If you haven't exercised much before pregnancy you'll want to be sure to start very slowly. You're body is going through tremendous changes and you don't want to place too many new demands on it. That being said, it is still a great idea to keep active by walking or swimming for aerobic activity, and yoga is great for stress reduction and flexibility.

Q. I am an avid jogger, but now that I'm pregnant, I'm concerned about hurting my baby. Is it OK to continue jogging?

L.H. Your little bundle is completely protected and would not be harmed by the movement. However, as you and your baby grow it may not be very comfortable for you to jog. Also, you may need to slow down to a brisk walk so that your heart rate does not get above the recommended 140 bpm by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.

Q. Are there any sports that I should not participate in now that I'm pregnant?

L.H. Pregnancy is not a good time to take up a new sport. During pregnancy the hips relax to prepare for delivery. Sports such as racquetball and basketball require quite a bit of fast footwork, making you more likely to be off balance. Sports that require speed, balance, high impact and intensity should be avoided unless you are very experienced – and even then the intensity should be decreased.
