Expecting to Dance

Dancing Your Way to Fitness

By Heather V. Long

"I danced and walked," says Candace Priore from Columbus, Ohio. "I danced just because I love music and that's how I expressed it. I walked because I had no other transportation. When I was pregnant with my first child, it was back in 1989 and the walking for exercise was just coming out and dancing wasn't even considered an exercise."

"I did water aerobics," says Trina Lambert of Englewood, Colo. "I chose this exercise because I wanted consistent exercise in the winter. I knew I wouldn't get my heart rate as high as I did with traditional aerobics and because any pregnancy klutziness wasn't going to lead to sprained ankles or other injuries. Also, the water gently supported my increased weight and allowed me to do activities I couldn't do on land – such as vigorous jumping."

Just for the Fun of It

Linda McCall from Garland, Texas, danced because she just loved it during both her pregnancies. "I danced just to dance with both of my pregnancies," she says. "Exercise wasn't something my doctor recommended. I danced with my family, I danced with my older child, heck – I danced when I was alone and the radio was on. If you time it, then it's exercise, but I just did it because I always felt better when I was done."

Pregnancy is a celebration of life and dancing is a way to express that celebration. So if you enjoyed dancing before you were pregnant, there is no reason to quit once you are. You can dance your way to fitness with a few precautions and a little joy in your step.
