Hits the Spot!

Dr. Sheldon Levine's Seven Minute Miracle

By Carma Haley Shoemaker

Pages:  1  2  3  4

Some will devote a good part of their day thinking about their own hot spot, fantasizing ways to get rid of it or covering it up. They worry that others are noticing it, too. This is why Levine calls them the "Hot Spots," because thinking about them can make you hot under the collar. It doesn't have to be that way.

"You can change things the moment you accept the fact that they are so hard to lose because genes guard the fat cells there very closely, turning them into fat fortresses," Dr. Levine says. "In fact, many patients that have had gastric bypass procedures lament that even after losing over a hundred pounds they still have their own hot spots like their thighs or hips that won't budge. Fat, not muscle, shapes you. If you want a shapely figure, you don't need lots of muscle. You need less fat."

Sounds easy – maybe too easy? Well, actually, it is. Even if you do nothing else but this program – not changing any other eating habits, no more exercising, no diets, etc. – you will see results, noticeable results, in only a couple weeks.

"No more excuses, reasons or rationalities for why your hot spots stay hot," Dr. Levine says. "Fat cells are as near and dear to your body as heart or kidney cells are. Everything that you need to spot reduce with is contained like a good TV dinner in your body."

Six-pack Abs

How can I achieve that "six-pack" look in my abs?

Three things contribute to the "six-pack" abdomen, according to Catherine Cram, postpartum fitness expert and exercise physiologist:

1. Genetics.

2. Body fat percentage.

3. Condition of the abdominal muscles.

"It's a sad but true fact that some people are able to get that 'six-pack' look with minimal effort, while others spend hours doing abdominal exercises and get barely a hint of definition," says Cram. "Whether or not you will be able to get that look is greatly dependent upon how lean your abdominal area is and genetically how your muscles respond to training. Some people develop very strong abdominal muscles without much definition, or they have defined muscles that are hidden under a thick layer of fat.

"The best way to increase definition in your ab muscles is to lose fat from that area and include challenging abdominal-strengthening exercises. If it makes you feel any better, consider the fact that I'm a lean exercise physiologist who works on her abdominals consistently and yet my sister who does no exercise, but inherited my mom's great muscle definition, has a six-pack to die for."
