Golf 101

Basic Golf Tips for Family Fitness

By Kelly Burgess

Pages:  1  2  3  4

Van Horn's No. 1 suggestion to avoid all that is to make sure your child has the right clubs. Never cut down a club or buy a too-big club thinking they'll grow into it. He's learned from golfing with his own tots that using the wrong club is tiring and frustrating for children. His company, among others, makes training irons that will automatically help kids place their hands correctly. Go back and forth between the trainer and a regular club until they learn the proper grip.

Once they have the right equipment, offer your children gentle suggestions sparingly, praise them when they do something right and sign them up for golf camp or a couple of lessons to improve their game. Also, make sure you're up on the rules of etiquette, because teaching social skill is your job. Golf can just give you a fun reason to model those skills.

Warm up to Golf

Golf may seem easy, but it stresses muscles we don't use every day. To get your body ready, thus reducing the chance of injury or soreness, Pederson recommends the following warm-ups for everyone. Repeat each 10 to 15 times.

  • Toe Touches: Do them briskly without stopping, like in gym class.
  • Windmills: Get arms out to side and rotate in a circular motion both backward and forward.
  • Squats: Start with hands at your side and raise them in front of you to shoulder level as you squat. Return to starting position.
