Family Physical Education
Fun Games Inspired by Gym Class
By Zac Robinson
This twist to a classic really revs up the energy. Begin by finding an area in which you can have a "middle" (one fence to another, between two trees, half court line of a basketball court, etc.) or make a playing area with a middle by using sticks, cones, etc. To play, move to the middle of your designated area and face your opponent. One person taps the other's shoulder and says either "duck" or "goose." The other then does the same. The game continues in this fashion until a player says, "Goose!" Whoever says goose must turn and run in a straight line toward their designated area (a tree, the fence, wherever). The other person gives chase until a tag is made or the player reaches their area. Both players then return to the middle, and the player who did not say "goose" begins the next game. Kids absolutely love this one and parents will too!
There you have it, three great games that can bring the family together, improve fitness and make the PE teacher beam with pride – a win, win, win situation! Have fun!
*As with all physically active games, there is a chance of injury. Please reduce the risk by ensuring proper warm up, an appropriate playing area and using best judgment.
