Soul to Soul vs. Role to Role

10 Steps to Raising a Conscious Family

By Annie Burnside

I love church and its sense of spiritual community, but from a young age, I longed for my own personal relationship with God. I longed for a deeper relationship with my own soul. I was the type of child who always asked my parents the "difficult" questions. Who is God? What happens when you die? Where is heaven?

At the age of 19 I was given my first spiritual book. That gift changed the course of my life. For the first time, I began to see myself as a beautiful, light-filled individual expression of God. Seeing the world through this new perspective led me to a spiritual journey that has been my passion for 15 years.

Recently it became my heart's desire to share this journey with others. I realized that it was time to share on a much deeper level than I ever had before with my husband and our three children. I wanted our family to delve into the deeper reaches of each other's souls. I wanted us to share with each other our true selves, our higher selves. Who are we really deep down? What lights us up? What fills our tank? What makes our eyes sparkle and our lips unknowingly curl into a smile? I wanted us to bear witness to the unfolding of each other's souls.

We decided to create the atmosphere and the venue within our own family for Soul to Soul interaction and sharing. Using our own divine guidance, we have implemented 10 steps into the fabric of our family's spiritual journey together. These steps have assisted us in creating a more spiritual and conscious family on a daily basis.

Step 1 – Soul to Soul versus Role to Role
This is where we make the shift to seeing ourselves and all others, first and foremost, as souls. The essence of who we are is a most beautiful, light-filled, six-sensory spirit.

This one shift in perspective transforms all interactions with others. In other words, it becomes not parent to child, but Soul to Soul. It becomes not neighbor to neighbor, but Soul to Soul. It becomes not waitress to customer, but Soul to Soul. This shift is a simple choice that we have in every interaction with another. It is not an outer religious concept, but rather an inner spiritual experience. Speak this way in your home.
