From Fat to 5K
Mother and Daughter Make the Resolution
By Jennifer Brown
As a stay-at-home mom, I often worry that Paige doesn't see me in an "important" enough light. I'm not making millions selling stock on Wall Street. I'm not championing civil rights in a courtroom. I'm not healing the sick or teaching English or leading the cause for women's rights. In her eyes, I'm just the one who pulls up to the curb in the minivan every day after school.
Of course, I know better. I know that I'm a strong woman who's got a very important job. Because of this it is my goal to often model to my budding young woman what it looks like to be not just a woman, but a strong woman. We will run this race alongside doctors, lawyers, women's rights leaders, stay-at-home moms and breast cancer survivors. We will all be strong women together.
In the meantime, I know we've got a lot of work to do. We will watch what we eat to prepare our bodies for a long, hot summer run. We will exercise regularly. And we will run/walk a 5K once per month for the next eight months until we are no longer walking at all, but are running the whole thing through with energy to spare.
We will also encourage each other. We will spend our running time supporting one another, high-fiving each other and maybe even smiling while we do it. We will consider our running time "girl time," using it to catch up with one another's lives. We will sweat together, pant together and get healthy together. It's going to be a long road, but it will be worth it.
